EuCIA is among the signatories of the Circular Plastics Alliance Declaration

The Circular Plastics Alliance for circular plastics

On 5 February 2019 in Brussels during the EU industry days 30 stakeholder organisations gathered for the first meeting of the Circular Plastics Alliance. This alliance is supported by the European Commission in the context of the European Plastics Strategy. The aim is to work together along the plastics value chains and ensure that 10 million tonnes of recycled plastics are used to make products and packaging in the EU in 2025.

They agreed to work in priority on 5 topics:

  • collection and sorting of plastic waste
  • product design for recycling
  • recycled plastic content in products
  • R&D and investments, including chemical recycling
  • monitoring of recycled plastics sold in the EU.

In this way, the Circular Plastics Alliance helps to deliver the circular economy with a life cycle approach and increase the use of recycled plastics into new products.

The Declaration promotes concrete actions

On 20 September 2019 in Brussels, the Circular Plastics Alliance presented and adopted its declaration, signed by more than 100 public and private partners covering the whole plastics value chain.

The declaration lays out concrete actions to reach the target, including:

  • improving the design of plastic products to make them more recyclable and integrate more recycled plastics
  • identifying untapped potential for more plastic waste collection, sorting and recycling across the EU, as well as the investment gaps
  • building a Research & Development agenda for circular plastics
  • establishing a transparent and reliable monitoring system to track all flows of plastic waste in the EU.
EuCIA signed the Declaration and confirms its commitment in searching solutions for recycling composites

As the association defending the composites industry, also known as the fibre reinforced plastics industry in Europe, EuCIA (the Brussels-based leading Association of the European Composites Industry) fully support this initiative. In fact, the president Roberto Frassine have joined the Circular Plastics Alliance with all other small and medium businesses, large corporations, business associations, standardisers, research organisations, and local and national authorities to promote the use of more recycled plastics in Europe through voluntary action.

EuCIA is fully involved in the circular economy running two major projects one related to the life cycle analyses of composites parts and the second one identifying the recycling routes for the recycling of composites and helping the industry to better understand the end of use of their products.
